Toronto Psychological Assessments

"Understanding the Problem is the Key to Solving It."TM

Toronto Psychological Assessments

Dr. O’Connor offers several categories of “Assessment Based Solutions” for children and their families. Her Toronto Psychological Assessments get "beneath the surface" to help you learn more about a child and the child problems that worry you. Explore your concerns about a child. Develop an understanding of a child's strengths and weaknesses. Learn what his or her needs and challenges are.

Dr. O'Connor's Toronto Psychological Assessments assess cognitive or learning skills, as well as the child's social, emotional and behavioral skills. This category of tests includes measures of IQ or cognitive ability, academic skill levels (e.g. math, reading, spelling and written language) and tests of memory, visual-motor and problem solving skills. Dr. O’Connor also assesses non-verbal skills, language or verbal ability and specific reading skills, such as phonological/phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, vocabulary and fluency.

Various measures also assess the social, emotional and behavioral development of the child. These help assess symptoms related to anxiety and depression or attention problems and acting out behaviors such as aggression, bullying, defiance and oppositional behaviors. These measures also explore the child's social skills and how he/she interacts with others.

Adaptive Scales help assess for developmental delays in children. These scales assess a wide range of adaptive skill areas, including daily living skills, communication, cognitive and social skills. They can help when you are worried about a child who is exhibiting developmental delays.

Assessment measures also help explore specific child concerns like Autism, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Attention Problems.

Dr. O'Connor's Toronto Psychological Assessments also explore the psychological well-being of children. This includes multiple intelligences, talents, giftedness, the emotional IQ and psychological competence and well being.

Dr. O’Connor’s reviews, scores and interprets the assessment findings. Following her review and interpretation of the information, she meets with you and provides you with a verbal and written report of her findings and her view of the situation. Her report (both verbal and oral) summarizes the assessment findings and includes recommendations to support and help the child. You will also learn how to build on and enhance the child’s strengths and how to do more of “what’s working.”

Parents can also complete measures that assess parenting and family issues that may impact on the child.

Dr. O'Connor's Toronto Psychological Assessments are geared to the specific needs of the child. It is not necessary, in most cases, to include all of the assessment measures discussed above. Not every child who exhibits a problem needs an extensive evaluation. And sometimes a psychological assessment is not needed. Dr. O'Connor will advise you of this when she feels this is the case.

When the child’s problems are more serious and difficult to manage, then a comprehensive psychological assessment can help.

How Can a Psychological Assessment Help?

Psychological assessments can help you get “beneath the surface” to increase your understanding of a child and the concerns that worry you. The assessment leads to practical effective solutions to address your concerns and help the children you care about and work with.

Dr. O’Connor reviews, scores and interprets the assessment findings, including the information provided by the parents about the child and their specific concerns. She then provides a verbal and written report of her findings and her view of the situation.
